Let's start with pain.

Heavy bleeding would be another logical place to begin, because if you're even thinking about a hysterectomy (or someone you love is), you're probably dealing with pain or bleeding or both, but squeamish readers might not appreciate my Public
Menstrual Accident story, which took place a few weeks before surgery, when I happened to be sitting in my chiropractor's waiting room, which was filled with young, male, presumably non-menopausal people who did not necessarily empathize when I suddenly blushed down the hall and into the restroom, then tried in vain to clean way too much blood out of tan shorts. (Thanks again for your kindness, Dr. Bill Booker, and for lending me your own cool blue basketball shorts to wear home.)

Pain is less messy. And pain was my primary symptom -- still is, four weeks post-op -- and this is my story. It might resemble your story if you're among the 500,000 American hysterectomy patients each year.
