    Bio: Mariah Burton Nelson

A star basketball player at Stanford University('78; one rebounding record remained unbroken for 24 years), Mariah Burton Nelson played professionally in Europe and in the first U.S. women's pro league (the WBL). Now a national expert on sports, success, and leadership, she has written five ground-breaking books:

  • We Are All Athletes: Bringing Courage, Confidence, and Peak Performance into Our Everyday Lives (Dare Press, July 2002)
  • The Unburdened Heart: Five Keys to Forgiveness and Freedom (Harper 2000).

Past President of the National Speakers Association/Washington, D.C., Nelson has been giving customized keynotes since 1987. Known for her originality and humor, Nelson uses her 26 athletic essentials, business research, audience participation, and video to show people how to lead and succeed with courage, compassion, commitment, and confidence. Clients include corporations (including Accenture, Brim Health Care, IBM, Fairview Health Services, Merrill Lynch), associations (American Organization of Nurse Executives, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Young Presidents Association,) government agencies (U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Justice, General Services Administration), and colleges (Smith, Colgate, Ohio State), plus hundreds of others.

In June 2003, Mariah received the Capital Outstanding Speaker Award from the National Speakers Association/Washington, DC Area.

Committed to practicing what she preaches, she swims two miles most mornings, drives golf balls up to 240 yards, and applies athletic essentials such as discipline, integrity, teamwork, leadership, and joy to her career as an author, journalist, and speaker. She also coaches her mother, Sarah, who holds two Arizona State breaststroke records for women aged 75-79.
