Bio (Long Version):
Mariah Burton Nelson
A former Stanford and pro basketball player, Mariah Burton Nelson is an award-winning communication professional who serves as Executive Director of the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation.
As an award-winning author, she has written 5 books:
- We Are All Athletes: Bringing Courage, Confidence, and Peak Performance into Our Everyday Lives (Dare Press, 2002, 2004)
- The Unburdened Heart: Five Keys to Forgiveness and Freedom (Harper 2000).
- Embracing Victory: Life Lessons in Competition and Compassion (Morrow 1998)
- The Stronger Women Get, The More Men Love Football: Sexism and the American Culture of Sports (Harcourt Brace 1994)
- Are We Winning Yet? How Women Are Changing Sports and Sports Are Changing Women (Random House 1991)
As a journalist, she has written a vast body of work for national publications, including Newsweek, the Washington Post, the New York Times, USA TODAY, and other publications.
In her role as an expert on sports, health, fitness, and gender issues, she has appeared on such shows as Today, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Dateline, Nightline, Crossfire, PrimeTime Live, and hundreds of other shows.
Past-president of the Washington, DC. chapter of the National Speakers Association, Nelson is known for her authenticity, originality, and humor. An outstanding (6'2") professional speaker, Nelson uses sports stories, "life lessons from the playing fields," workplace examples, and current events to show people how to achieve meaningful goals and how to lead and succeed with courage, compassion, commitment, and confidence. Clients include IBM, Merrill Lynch, Physicians Mutual Insurance Company, and hundreds of other corporate, association, government, and college audiences.
Still an athlete, Nelson swims 2 miles each morning and coaches her mother, Sarah, who holds three Arizona breaststroke records for women aged 75-79.
She also sings tenor in Mosaic Harmony, a community choir that draws on African-American spiritual music to "unify the world, one song at a time." She also serves on the Mosaic Harmony board of directors.
She has also served on several other boards, including the Washington Business Journal, the National Speakers Association/Washington, D.C., and Washington Independent Writers.
