Why are Chapters 9 and 10 not available?

Chapters 9 and 10 were not updated for the 2005 edition. Both were related to the media. Fortunately, changes in media coverage in the past ten years has been so dramatic that these chapters could not be updated without being totally rewritten; which would have made this a different book For recent media analysis, see Mary Jo Kane's writings on sports and the media in various publications. (She's the Director of the Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota.)
